Building Organic Matter for Healthy Soils: An Overview

Over the past 30 years, research has documented some of the myriad organisms and functions of the “soil food web,” and characterized several distinct components of soil organic matter. Today, most Extension, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and other agricultural professionals understand the soil as a living system that must be “fed” and protected with living vegetation and suitable organic inputs in order to sustain agricultural production in the long run.
